Charles L Emerman, MD has been practicing emergency medicine for 40 years and has been the Addiction Medicine Fellowship director since 2019. He is the medical director of the inpatient addiction medicine consult service at MetroHealth Medical Center, a busy urban county hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dr. Emerman's research interests are in the initiation of treatment for tobacco, alcohol, and opioid use disorders in the Emergency Department and inpatient hospital environments. He has authored abstracts and articles that have evaluated the use of therapy for tobacco use disorder in the Emergency Department, outlining the effectiveness of that process and populations that are most likely to stop smoking following intervention. He has also authored articles looking at the initiation of buprenorphine therapy for opioid use disorder on the inpatient units, addressing common misconceptions about the ability to start therapy in the absence of withdrawal symptoms. Dr. Emerman has also studied the treatment of alcohol withdrawal syndromes in the hospital and the initiation of therapy for alcohol use disorder.
Dr. Emerman is the recipient of State of Ohio grants evaluating Ohio Medical School curriculum around the opioid crisis and recommending model curriculum for adoption.
