Bruce S. Liese, PhD, ABPP is a Professor of Family Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) and Clinical Director at the Cofrin Logan Center for Addiction Research and Treatment at the University of Kansas. He is President-elect of the San Diego Psychological Association, a Fellow in three American Psychological Association (APA) Divisions, and an APA Council Representative. He has been Director of the cognitive-behavioral therapy unit of a large multi-center NIH-funded cocaine treatment study. He has taught hundreds of courses and workshops on addictive behaviors, psychotherapy, and evidence-based practice, and supervised hundreds of psychotherapy trainees. Dr. Liese has more than 75 publications, and he has co-authored three textbooks on addictions. His most recent text, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy of Addictive Disorders, was published in 2022 with co-author Dr. Aaron T. Beck. Dr. Liese has been President of the APA Division on Addiction Psychology. He was Editor of The Addictions Newsletter (TAN) for ten years, an official publication of the Division on Addiction Psychology. For his work on this newsletter, Dr. Liese received a President’s Citation from the Division on Addiction Psychology. In 2015, Dr. Liese received the Distinguished Career Contributions to Education and Training award from the Division on Addiction Psychology, and an APA Presidential Citation in 2018 ("Citizen Psychologist" from the American Psychological Association) for service to his community. Dr. Liese continues to see an average of 25 patients per week. He describes his patients as his "Greatest Teachers."
