8:30 AM – 9:30 AM MDT
Location: Adams Ballroom BCD
Session Description: Emotional sobriety was first introduced by Bill Wilson back in the 1950's. In fact, Bill W. claimed that the goal of working the Twelve Steps of the AA program was to discover emotional sobriety, that is once physical sobriety was achieved. He hoped that this concept would spearhead the next major development in recovery. Unfortunately, Bill's dream never materialized. However, in the last twenty years there has been a resurgence in understanding emotional sobriety and its crucial role in sustaining recovery. Dr. Berger has been a pioneer in these efforts. In this presentation Dr. Berger will share the results of over two decades of research and clinical integration of emotional sobriety into recovery and share his insights into how a practice of emotional sobriety can be achieved. Particular attention will be given to identifying the core concepts of emotional sobriety and techniques to integrate this into counseling sessions.
